Galahs Are Beautiful Pink Cockatoos Whose Name Means 'Idiot'

I've questioned avian naming conventions before, particularly since so many seem to share the colloquial names for women's body parts, but here's a pretty bird with a name that doesn't seem so funny.

At least until you learn its origins.

Galahs are one of the most common species of cockatoo.

In their native Australia, they're frequently seen living their lives in urban areas, like a much prettier sort of pigeon.

They are sociable and happily hang out with other common urban parrots.

The name "galah" comes from *gilaa*, in the Aboriginal language of Yuwaalaraay.

Gilaa means "idiot" or "clown" and the bird earned the name for its habit of making a lot of noise.

Over time, the term transitioned into common Australian derogatory slang. If someone calls you a "galah" then they are calling you a loud-mouthed idiot.

Due to the birds' flashy pink feathers, they may also be calling you gaudy.

So, while pretty, galah cockatoos definitely seem to fall on the annoying side of urban wildlife — again, much like pigeons.

But at least they're pretty, right?

Their looks and general friendliness have made them popular pets.

Like many parrots, they can live long, healthy lives in captivity as long as they are provided with the space, nutrition, and socializing they require.

However, they are not a quiet bird, so maybe not so great in an apartment.
